Link Your Phone to Microsoft Teams: SMS Integration Guide
Microsoft Teams is a powerful tool for chatting, video calls, and meetings. Microsoft now offers features to connect your phone to Teams, allowing you to send and receive text messages (SMS) directly from your computer. This guide covers the setup, administrative requirements, and important regulatory details.
Why link your phone?
Linking your phone keeps all your conversations in one place. You can manage texts, check missed calls, and see voicemails without picking up your phone. This helps you stay focused on your work.
What happens when done?
Once you finish, your phone will sync with your computer. You will see your text messages appear in the Chat section of the Teams app. Please note that some features like GIFs or audio calls via SMS may not be available.
Administrative Prerequisites and Licensing
Before you begin, your IT administrator must ensure your organization meets specific requirements. Microsoft Teams SMS integration is currently limited to users in the United States and Canada. Your organization must have a valid Microsoft Teams Phone license and a Calling Plan phone number assigned to the user. Without these, the SMS features will not appear in the Teams Admin Center.
10DLC Registration and Compliance
To send SMS messages, businesses must comply with 10DLC (10-Digit Long Code) regulations. This is a standard for business messaging in North America. You must register your brand and campaign in the Teams Admin Center. This process ensures your messages are not blocked by carriers. Approval can take several days to a few weeks depending on the carrier review process.
How to Enable SMS in the Teams Admin Center (Admin Only)
Note: This step requires admin privileges.
- Log in to the Teams Admin Center.
- Navigate to Voice > Phone numbers.
- Select the user’s phone number and ensure it is voice-enabled.
- Go to Messaging policies to enable SMS features for specific users.
- Ensure your 10DLC brand and campaign are approved to avoid message segment delivery failures.
How to link your phone
Follow these steps to set it up:
- Open the Start menu and find Microsoft Teams in your list of apps.

- You can also launch the app using the Taskbar.

- If a small window appears, click the expansion button on the menu bar to open the full Teams window.

- Click the Settings and more (three dots) button near your profile picture. Select Settings from the menu.

- On the left side of the screen, click the Mobile device tab.

- Look for the SMS messages integration section and click the Link your phone button.

- A window will pop up with a QR code. Use your phone to scan this code.

- Check the code on your phone to confirm the connection. Once finished, your device will show as connected.

You will now see your text messages in the Chat section of your Teams app.

Summary
By connecting your phone to Microsoft Teams, you turn your computer into a communication hub. You can now read and reply to text messages and track your missed calls and voicemails directly from your desktop. Remember that this feature requires specific licensing, 10DLC registration, and is limited to the US and Canada. This setup saves time and keeps your workflow organized.
Is SMS in Teams available outside the US and Canada?
Currently, Microsoft Teams SMS integration is exclusively available for users located in the United States and Canada. Microsoft has not yet announced a timeline for expanding this specific SMS functionality to other international regions. Please check the official Microsoft Learn documentation for the most recent updates on geographical availability.
Can I use SMS with Direct Routing or Operator Connect?
SMS integration in Microsoft Teams is primarily designed for Microsoft Calling Plans. While some providers using Operator Connect may support SMS, it is not natively supported through Direct Routing. You should consult with your specific telecommunications provider to see if they offer SMS capabilities that integrate with the Microsoft Teams platform.
