Why change your wallpaper automatically?

A background that changes by itself keeps your workspace from feeling stale. It also lets you see your favorite photos without swapping them by hand. Set it once and Windows does the rest.

What happens when you are done?

Once you finish the steps below, Windows cycles through your chosen images at the interval you set. If nothing changes right away, wait for one full interval to pass. The new picture appears when the timer runs out, not the moment you save the setting.

Option 1Use Windows Spotlight

Windows Spotlight downloads a new background image from Bing every day. It sets up an automatic wallpaper change in Windows 11 without any extra apps. The daily photos come from around the world, so you get a different view each day.

Spotlight needs an internet connection to fetch new pictures. It works the same on Home and Pro. On a work PC managed by an organization, an administrator may have turned it off. If so, the option will be missing or greyed out.

1. Click the Start menu and open Settings app⚙️. The Settings⚙️ window opens.

2. In the left-hand list in Settings, select Personalization. The Personalization page opens, with a row of options on the right.

3. Select the Background tile on the right. The background options page opens.

4. Open the menu next to Personalize your background and select Windows spotlight. Your desktop switches to the current Spotlight picture, and a small picture icon may appear on the desktop.

New images now download and display automatically, with a fresh one each day. There is no interval setting for Spotlight. To go back to a fixed picture, open the same menu and choose Picture, Solid color or Slideshow instead.

Option 2Use your own photos with Slideshow

Slideshow is a built-in feature that cycles through a folder of images. Use it for an automatic wallpaper change in Windows 11 with your own pictures. You pick a folder on your computer, and Windows rotates through the photos in it at the interval you choose.

Before you start, put the pictures you want in one folder. Windows only uses images stored directly in that folder. Pictures in subfolders may also be included, so keep the folder tidy and remove anything you do not want on your desktop.

1. Go to Settings › Personalization › Background. You can open Settings⚙️ from the Start menu⊞.
2. Open the menu next to Personalize your background and select Slideshow. New options appear below it, including a folder chooser and a timer.

3. Next to Choose a folder for your slideshow, click the Browse button. A folder picker opens.

4. Select the folder that holds your photos and confirm your choice. The folder path now shows in Settings.
5. Turn on the Shuffle toggle if you want the images to appear in a random order.
6. Open the Change picture every menu and pick an interval. The choices run from 1 minute to 1 day. A longer interval such as 30 minutes or 1 hour is easier on the eye than a very short one.

On a laptop, Windows may pause the slideshow while it runs on battery. If the picture stops changing when you unplug, look for the option that lets the slideshow run on battery power and turn it on. It uses a little more power.

Advanced Customization and Troubleshooting

If the wallpaper stops changing or resets to one picture, check your theme settings first. Applying a new theme replaces your slideshow settings, so go back to Settings › Personalization › Background and confirm Slideshow is still selected. Then check these common causes:

• The slideshow folder was moved, renamed or deleted. Browse to it again.
• The PC is a laptop on battery power, or its power plan has the desktop background slideshow set to paused.
• A work or school policy is controlling the background.

If none of those apply, Registry Editor tweaks can sometimes fix wallpaper resets. The registry is Windows’ central database for system settings. Back it up or create a restore point before you change anything there. A wrong edit can cause problems that are hard to trace.

Multi-Monitor and Virtual Desktop Configuration

Windows 11 lets different virtual desktops use different backgrounds. To set one, switch to the desktop you want to change, then right-click an empty part of the desktop and select Personalize. This manages the setting for each workspace separately. On current builds you can also open Task View, right-click a desktop thumbnail and choose a background for that desktop only.

Third-Party Automation Tools

Third-party wallpaper tools such as ‘Wallpaper Engine’ or ‘Dynamic Theme’ offer more advanced features. They add video backgrounds and weather-based image changes. They can also handle hundreds of high-resolution image files better than the native slideshow. Some are paid, and animated backgrounds use extra memory and processor time, so test one before you rely on it.
