Restoring touchpad gestures in Windows 11 clears out your custom taps and swipes, putting all multi-finger shortcuts back to factory settings. Touchpad gestures are the trackpad shortcuts you use to speed up daily tasks, like using three fingers to switch between open apps or four fingers to open Task View.

Windows 11 includes roughly 15 built-in gestures for scrolling, zooming, and switching screens. Resetting these shortcuts fixes strange tracking glitches and gives you a clean slate when your custom trackpad settings stop working right.

⚡ Quick Answer

Open Settings , navigate to Bluetooth & devices, select Touchpad, turn off the touchpad toggle, and click the Reset button that appears. This will restore your touchpad gestures to their default settings.

Why reset your touchpad gestures?

Multi-finger swipes often stop working when a driver glitches. A reset clears out that bad data. Resetting also helps when gestures feel slow or broken because this action clears old data that might be causing errors, such as accidental setting changes.

What happens when you reset?

Windows 11 will remove all custom configurations during this process. Your touchpad will revert to its factory state, much like when you first unboxed the laptop. Personal files remain completely untouched.

How to reset touchpad gestures in 🪟 Windows 11

You can quickly reset touchpad gestures in Windows 11 back to their original factory defaults through the main Settings menu. This fixes erratic scrolling, missing multi-finger taps, and swipe actions that stopped working properly. Open your Settings app , go to Bluetooth & devices, select Touchpad, and click the hidden reset button to restore your default controls.

Advanced Troubleshooting: Device Manager

You can fix stubborn touchpad problems by using Device Manager to completely uninstall and reinstall your touchpad driver. Windows automatically detects the hardware and puts a fresh driver in place when you restart your computer, clearing out corrupted files that block your gestures from working.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click your HID-compliant mouse or touchpad driver and select Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.

Registry Fix for Touchpad Issues

You can force a deep reset of your touchpad configuration by deleting specific saved values inside Registry Editor (a central database for system and app settings). This clears out corrupted gesture profiles that survive normal settings changes and driver reinstalls, giving your touchpad a totally clean slate.

Registry Editor handles this manual task. Press Windows key + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PrecisionTouchPad

Delete the keys inside this folder to force the reset. Restart the computer afterward.

Difference Between Precision and Standard Drivers

A Precision Touchpad is a special design from Microsoft that offers smooth, multi-finger gestures. Standard hardware often relies on separate vendor software; for example, Synaptics is a common one. Precision drivers are built directly into Windows 11, making them more stable and manageable.
