How to Open HEIC Files in Windows 11
You open HEIC files in Windows 11 by installing the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Container) is an image file format that uses advanced compression to save storage space while maintaining high image quality, often found on iPhones and iPads. Unlike macOS, Windows 11 does not natively support HEIC files without an additional component.
Installing the free HEIF Image Extensions, specifically version 1.0 or newer, allows your Windows 11 system to recognize and display these images directly through the default Photos app.
Once the extension is installed, you can simply double-click any HEIC file, and it will open seamlessly, just like your other common image formats like JPEGs or PNGs.
Install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. After installation, HEIC files will open automatically in the Photos app. Alternatively, use a third-party viewer by selecting “Open with” and choosing your preferred app.
Using the Microsoft Photos App
Windows 11’s built-in Photos app can open HEIC files, but you’ll need to grab a free extension from the Microsoft Store first. Once installed, just right-click your HEIC photo, choose ‘Open with,’ and select ‘Photos’ to view it.
- Open your folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click your HEIC image.
- Select Open with and then click Photos.
You’ll see a message that says: “The HEVC Extension is required to display this file.” Click the link that says “Download and install it now.”
Once the download finishes, your HEIC images will open automatically in the Photos app.
Using a Third-Party App
If you prefer not to use the Microsoft Store or want another option, you can easily open HEIC files on Windows 11 with a third-party app. After downloading and installing your chosen program, simply right-click the HEIC file, select ‘Open with,’ and pick your new app from the list.
- Download and install the app from the link above. Note: This process may require admin privileges.
- Right-click your image file.
- Select Open with and then Choose another app.
Select your new viewer from the list. Check the box for ‘Always use this app to open .heic files’ and then click OK.

Windows 11 cannot open Apple HEIC files out of the box. You can solve this by downloading the HEVC Extension through the Microsoft Store or by installing a third-party photo viewer. Both methods allow your computer to recognize and display your mobile photos.
