How to Install HEVC Codec on Windows 11

Windows 11 does not come with the HEVC (H.265) codec installed by default. If you try to open a video in this format, it likely will not play.

Why: This format is used for high-quality video recording on devices like iPhones and for 4K Blu-ray discs. Without the right codec, Windows does not know how to read these files.

What happens when done: Once installed, your computer will be able to play modern, high-quality video files without errors.

Option 1: The Official Microsoft Store Method

You can purchase the official extension directly from Microsoft. This requires a Microsoft account with a payment method attached.

  1. Open the Microsoft Store from your taskbar.
  2. Search for HEVC Video Extensions.
  3. Select the app from the results.

Note: This process requires standard user permissions to install apps from the store.

Option 2: The Free VLC Method

If you prefer not to pay, you can use a free, third-party video player that has these codecs built-in. This is a great way to avoid setting up payment information.

  1. Visit the VLC download page for Windows. Download the official VLC media player for Windows – VideoLAN
  2. Download and install the program.
  3. Set VLC as your default media player.

Note: Installing third-party software requires admin privileges on your Windows 11 system.

You should also consider installing High-Efficiency Image Format (HEIF) support from the Microsoft Store. This allows you to view modern photo formats taken on iPhones, which are also not supported by default on Windows 11.

Summary

You need the HEVC codec to play modern video files on your computer. You can either pay a small fee for the official Microsoft extension or download the free VLC media player, which includes the necessary tools automatically. Both methods will let you watch your high-quality videos without further issues.
