How to Use Fast User Switching in Windows 11

This guide explains how to move between different user accounts on Windows 11 without needing to log out of your current session.

Why Use Fast User Switching?

Do you share your computer with family or coworkers? Fast User Switching allows you to jump between accounts in seconds. Your apps and files stay open in the background. When you return to your account, you can start exactly where you left off.

What Happens When You Switch Accounts?

Your current session remains active. All open programs and files stay running. You can pick up right where you stopped. This is very helpful when multiple people use the same machine.

Note: Fast User Switching does not work if you are using Remote Desktop Connection %%LNK0%%. Always save your work before switching. If another user restarts or shuts down the computer, any unsaved work in your session will be lost.

Method 1: Switch from the Login Screen

The easiest way to switch is at the login screen. You will see a list of all accounts on the computer. Simply click the account you want to use and log in.

Method 2: Switch from the Start Menu

You can switch accounts while you are on your desktop. Click the Start button on your taskbar. Click on your account name or profile picture. A list of available accounts will appear. Click the account you want to use.

Method 3: Use the Shutdown Dialog Window

You can use a quick keyboard shortcut to switch users:

  1. Press WIN + D to show your desktop.
  2. Press ALT + F4 to open the shutdown window.
  3. Click Switch user.

Method 4: Use Ctrl + Alt + Delete

This is often the fastest way to switch:

  1. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL at the same time.
  2. A menu screen will appear.
  3. Click Switch user from the list.

Summary

Windows 11 makes it easy to share a computer while keeping your work separate. You can:

  • Use the login screen at startup.
  • Use the Start menu for quick swaps.
  • Use the shutdown menu with WIN + D and ALT + F4.
  • Use the command CTRL + ALT + DEL for the fastest access.

Always remember to save your files before switching. While your apps continue to run in the background, a system restart will close them and cause you to lose any unsaved changes.
