How to Pause Search Indexing in Windows 11

Pausing search indexing in Windows 11 temporarily stops your PC from updating its file search list, which helps free up system resources when you need them for demanding tasks.

Search indexing helps Windows find your files, emails, and other content much faster. It does this by building a special list, called an index, that notes details about everything on your computer.

When you first set up Windows or after a big update, this indexing process can take a few hours. Afterward, Windows usually works on it quietly in the background, only updating the list when you add or change files.

Windows normally slows down indexing when you’re actively using your computer and speeds it up when you’re away. However, you can manually pause it yourself.

You can pause Windows search indexing for up to 15 minutes, after which search indexing will restart automatically. To pause search indexing, you must be logged into your PC as an administrator.

⚡ Quick Answer

Open Settings, navigate to Privacy & security, then Search, and click Advanced indexing options. If indexing is running, select the Pause button. Indexing will stop for 15 minutes before resuming automatically.

How to Resume Indexing Sooner

⚠️Warning
If you need to resume Windows 11 search indexing before the automatic 15-minute pause ends, you have a couple of options. You can restart the Windows Search service to pick up where it left off, or you can choose to rebuild the entire index to start the process from the very beginning.
  • Restart the Windows Search service: This will make indexing continue from where it left off.
  • Rebuild the index: This will start the indexing process all over again from the beginning.
