How to Create a new security key PIN on Windows 11
Creating a new security key PIN on Windows 11 lets you set a fresh secret code for your physical security key. This PIN acts like a password, protecting access to your account through that key.
You’ll need this PIN when you sign in to your PC with your security key. If you forget your current PIN or want a more secure one, Windows 11 allows you to easily create a new one through the Settings app.
This process ensures you can regain access or enhance your security if your original PIN is compromised or you simply wish to update it.
Open Settings, navigate to Accounts > Sign-in options > Security Key. Click Manage, connect your security key, and follow prompts to add a new PIN, confirming it by entering it twice.
Open Windows Settings
First, open Windows Settings. Click the Start button, usually in the bottom-left corner of your screen. Then, click the gear icon. This opens the Settings window.

Go to Accounts and Sign-in Options
Windows 11 security settings allow users to manage sign-in methods. Within the Settings window, users locate and click on Accounts, which displays an icon resembling a person. On the Accounts screen's left side, a list of options appears, including Sign-in options, which users click to proceed.

Find Your Security Key Settings
The Sign-in options screen appears. This screen lets you control how you log in to your computer. Scroll down to find Security Key. Click on the Security Key option.
Manage Your Security Key
Under the Security Key section, you will see a button that says Manage. Click this button. This is where you will set up or change your security key’s PIN.

Connect Your Security Key
To create a new PIN for your security key on Windows 11, first connect your physical security key to your computer. If it’s a USB key, plug it in. For an NFC key, tap it on an NFC reader. Follow any prompts on your screen so Windows can recognize your key.

Add a New Security Key PIN
After Windows recognizes your security key, look for the Security Key PIN section. Select the option to add a new PIN. You’ll be asked to enter your new PIN, so choose one that’s secure yet easy to remember. Then, type it again to confirm.
You will need to type your new PIN a second time to make sure it’s correct. They must match exactly.

After you enter your PIN twice, click OK.
Confirmation
Your Windows 11 security key will now be updated with the new PIN you set up. You should see a confirmation message indicating the update was successful. Your new PIN is now active and will be used the next time you sign in with your security key.
