How to Change Narrator’s Reading of Capitalized Text in Windows 11
Windows 11’s Narrator can change how it speaks capitalized words, like making them louder or saying “all caps.”
Narrator is the built-in screen reader that speaks what’s on your screen. It helps people who are blind or have low vision use their PC.
By default, Narrator might say “Capital” before a capitalized word, which can be annoying. For instance, it might read “HELLO” as “Capital H E L L O.”
The Narrator capitalization setting lets you decide if it says “all caps” or just ignores capitalization. This makes reading much smoother.
Open Settings and go to Accessibility, then Narrator. Expand Verbosity level, select “Change how capitalized text is read,” and choose “Don’t announce,” “Increase pitch,” or “Say cap.
Why This Matters
Microsoft updated how Narrator reads capitalized text to assist users with visual impairments. Previously, Narrator used a higher pitch for capitalized words. This could confuse some users. The new way matches how people normally read text.
Your Options
- Don’t announce – Narrator doesn’t mention that text is capitalized
- Increase pitch – Narrator raises its voice pitch when reading capitalized text
- Say cap – Narrator says the word “cap” before capitalized letters
Pick the option that works best for you.
