How to Clean Up Your Windows Clipboard History, One Item at a Time

What is Windows Clipboard History?

Think of Clipboard History as a temporary notepad that keeps what you copy, mainly text and images. Without it, Windows holds only the last thing you copied, and each new copy replaces it. With it turned on, the older items stay in the list until you remove them, the list reaches its 25-item limit, or you restart the 🔄 PC.

Pinned items are the exception. They stay in the panel after a restart until you unpin or delete them. Keep that in mind if you pin anything sensitive.

How to Remove One Item from Clipboard History

Removing an unwanted item takes a few clicks. Deleting single entries keeps your workspace tidy and stops you from pasting sensitive information into the wrong window later. It also leaves the rest of your history in place, so you don’t lose clips you still need.

This works the same on Windows 11 Home and Pro. You don’t need admin rights, and you don’t need to restart.

Step 1Open Clipboard Viewer

1. Click in any app or text field so Windows knows where you are working, then press Windows + V on your keyboard.

The clipboard history panel opens as a small window near your text cursor or at the bottom of the screen. It lists the items you copied recently.

Click Turn on to start saving your copied items. Only items you copy after that point are stored.

If the panel never shows up and doesn't offer to turn it on, check Settings › System › Clipboard and make sure Clipboard history is switched on. You can turn it off there later if you no longer want Windows to keep a history.

Step 2Find the Item to Delete

2. Look through the list to find the item you want to remove. Scroll if you need to.

Items usually appear in chronological order, with the most recent entry at the top. Pinned items can sit above the rest, so a very old clip may appear first if you pinned it. Text clips show a preview of their content, and images show as small thumbnails.

Step 3Access Options for the Item

3. Find the three dots next to the item you want to delete and click them.

On some builds the dots only appear when you hover over an item. If you don't see them, move your mouse over the entry. You should now see the options for that specific clipboard entry.

Once deleted, the item is gone from your history permanently unless you copy it again.

There is no undo button. If you delete the wrong clip, go back to the source and copy it again.

Step 4Choose "Delete"

4. Click Delete in the small menu that appeared. It may be shown as a trash can icon.

The item disappears from the list right away, and the other entries stay where they are. If you want to wipe everything instead, use the Clear all button at the top of the panel. Be aware that Clear all removes every item except the ones you pinned.
