How to Change Audio Sources in Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams audio sources let you choose which microphone and speakers your calls and meetings use.
This is important if your computer has multiple audio devices, like a built-in microphone, a webcam microphone, headphones with a mic, or different speaker systems.
Problems like not being heard or hearing audio from the wrong device happen often, especially when you first join a meeting.
Thankfully, Teams makes it easy to switch between these sources, whether you need to select your headset for a quiet office or a conference room speakerphone for a group call.
You can change your audio device right before a meeting starts or even during an active call in Teams.
You can change audio sources before joining a meeting by selecting “Computer audio,” “Phone audio,” or “Room audio” on the pre-join screen, or during a meeting by clicking More actions (three dots), then Device settings, and selecting your desired speaker and microphone.
Setting Up Your Audio Before You Join
Checking your audio right before you join a meeting is ideal. The screen that appears before joining is your opportunity to fine-tune your sound. Think of it like a quick sound check before a performance!
Using Your Computer’s Sound
Microsoft Teams uses your computer’s sound by default, meaning it will pick up audio from your computer’s built-in microphone and speakers, or any other audio devices you’ve already set up in Windows.
Upon clicking to join a meeting, the pre-join screen appears.
- Look for the Audio section.
- It usually says Computer audio by default.
- If this is what you want, you are ready! Click Join now.

Switching to Your Phone’s Sound
You can use your phone for audio in Microsoft Teams if your computer’s microphone isn’t great or if you prefer your phone’s sound quality.
Here are a couple of methods for using your phone for audio:
- On the Teams screen before joining, go to the Audio section.
- Choose Phone audio.
- You will see two choices:
- Call me: Teams will call your phone. You need to type in your phone number. Then Teams will connect you to the meeting sound. Your phone will be your microphone and speaker.
- Dial in manually: This gives you a phone number, a Conference ID, and a toll-free number. You can call this number using your phone’s dialer to join the meeting’s audio.

Once you select your phone as the audio source and complete the steps, your phone will manage the audio playback and recording.
Using a Meeting Room’s Sound System
Microsoft Teams can connect to a meeting room’s sound system, which is great for making sure everyone in the room can hear and be heard clearly.
- On the screen before joining, find the Audio options.
- Choose Room audio.
- A list will show up with meeting rooms and their sound systems. Pick the right room.
- Click Join now.

Joining Without Any Sound
You can join a Microsoft Teams meeting without using any audio if you only need to watch or chat, saving you from needing a microphone or speakers.
- On the screen before joining, under the Audio section, select Don’t use audio.
You will enter the meeting with your microphone and speakers muted. This is practical for large meetings where speaking isn’t necessary. It’s also helpful if you’re experiencing audio problems and prefer to join silently first. You can enable your sound later if the need arises.

Changing Audio While In a Meeting
You can change your audio source in Microsoft Teams even after you’ve joined a meeting by going to the meeting controls and selecting your preferred speaker and microphone.
- In the Teams meeting controls, click on More actions (it looks like three dots …).
- Hover over Device settings.
- Under Audio devices, you will see options for your speaker and microphone.
- Click the dropdown menu next to Speaker to choose where you want to hear sound from.
- Click the dropdown menu next to Microphone to choose which microphone you want to use.
Teams will immediately begin using your newly selected audio devices.

Summary
Changing your audio source in Microsoft Teams helps you hear meetings better and ensures others can hear you, fixing common sound problems.
What happens when done? When you change your audio source, Teams will start utilizing the device you’ve chosen for listening (speaker) and your selected microphone for recording your voice. This ensures you get the clearest audio during your meetings.
