How to Manually Download Windows 11 Updates
Windows 11 usually updates itself automatically. Sometimes, this process fails or gets blocked by settings. When this happens, you can manually download the update files from Microsoft. This keeps your computer secure while you figure out why your automatic updates are not working.
Why manually update?
You should do this if your computer stops receiving automatic updates. It is a temporary fix to make sure your system has the latest security patches and features.
What happens when done?
Once the installation finishes, your computer will be fully patched to the latest version. You will likely need to restart your PC to finish the process.
How to manually download updates
To start, you need the KB (Knowledge Base) number of the update you want. This is a unique code for every Windows update.
- Visit the Microsoft Update Catalog Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Type the KB number into the search box and click Search.
- Check the update title and product name to make sure it matches your version of Windows 11.

- Click the Download button next to the correct file.

- A pop-up window will appear. Click the link inside to start the download.

- Open your Downloads folder and double-click the file you just saved. Note: This step requires admin privileges.

- The Windows Update Standalone Installer will start and prepare your system. This may take a few minutes.

- Follow the on-screen prompts to finish the installation. Restart your computer when finished.
If you need to verify your system path or check file integrity after an update, you can use the command prompt. For example, you can check files in C:\Windows\System32 to ensure everything is in order.
Summary
If your computer is not updating on its own, you can download files directly from Microsoft using the Microsoft Update Catalog. Just find the KB number, download the file, and run it as an administrator. This is a great way to stay protected while you troubleshoot your automatic update settings.

In Windows 10, I was notified of updates being available and then I could choose whether I wanted to install them. I now have a new laptop with Windows 11 and the updates are installed automatically. Is it still possible to manually install them when they are available?
