How to Adjust Keyboard Repeat Rate in Windows 11

If you hold down a key on your keyboard, the letter or symbol repeats until you let go. The Repeat rate controls how fast it repeats. You can change this speed, or even turn it off if you want.

There is also a setting called Repeat delay. This controls how long you need to hold a key before it starts repeating.

Change Keyboard Repeat Rate Using Control Panel

Here’s an easy way to change the keyboard repeat speed using the Control Panel:

  1. Open the Control Panel on your Windows 11 PC.
  2. In the Control Panel, set View by: to Icons (not Category).
  3. Find and click on Keyboard.
  4. In the Keyboard Properties window, go to the Speed tab.
  5. Under Character repeat, move the Repeat rate slider to the left for slower repeat or to the right for faster repeat.
  6. You can also adjust the Repeat delay slider to set how long you hold a key before it starts repeating.
  7. Click OK to save your changes.

Change Keyboard Repeat Rate Using Windows Registry (Advanced Users)

If you feel comfortable making advanced changes, you can also change the repeat rate using the Windows Registry Editor.

Warning: Be careful when editing the registry. Making wrong changes can cause problems with your PC. It’s a good idea to back up your registry before you start.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Windows Registry Editor.
  2. Go to this folder path:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard
  3. If you don’t see the Keyboard folder, right-click the Control Panel folder, choose New > Key, and name it Keyboard.
  4. In the right pane, right-click and select New > String Value.
  5. Name the new value KeyboardSpeed.
  6. Double-click KeyboardSpeed and enter a number between 0 (slow) and 31 (fast) to set your repeat rate speed.
  7. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer to apply the changes.

Summary

  • Changing the keyboard repeat rate can help you type faster or slower, depending on what feels comfortable.
  • You can easily change this setting in the Control Panel or, if you prefer, in the Registry Editor.
  • Try different settings to find what works best for your typing style.
