This guide explains how to control whether Microsoft Edge opens your Office files directly in the browser or downloads them to your computer.

Microsoft Edge Microsoft Edge browser is the default browser for Windows 11 and 12. While it is great for quick tasks, you might prefer to download files to edit them in your desktop apps. Users can  switch to their preferred or favorite browser if they choose.

Why do this? Sometimes you want to save a file immediately rather than waiting for it to load in a web tab. What happens when done? Your computer will prompt you to save the file or open it with your installed Office software instead of using the browser window.

Disable or enable opening Office files with Edge

By default, Edge tries to open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files inside the browser. If you want to change this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Click the Settings and more (three dots) icon in the top right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click on Downloads in the left-hand menu.
  5. Look for the Open Office files in the browser setting.

Toggle the switch to Off if you want files to download automatically. Toggle it to On if you prefer them to open in the browser.

Note: If you use the Microsoft 365 sidebar or have installed “Progressive Web Apps” (PWAs) for Office, these tools may override your browser settings and force files to open in their own dedicated windows.

Turn on or off open Office files in the browser via Windows Registry Editor

You can also control this setting using the Registry Editor. Warning: This method requires Administrator access. We recommend using the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive for user-specific changes to keep your system safe.

The QuickViewOfficeFilesEnabled controls this policy.

  1. Open the Windows Registry.
  2. Navigate to the following path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge.
  3. If the Edge folder does not exist, right-click the Microsoft folder, select New, and create a key named Edge.

  2. Name this item QuickViewOfficeFilesEnabled.
  3. Double-click the new item. Ensure the Base is set to Decimal.
  4. Set the Value data to 1 to enable opening in the browser, or 0 to disable it and force a download.
