How to Enable or Disable Windows 11 Startup Sound

When you turn on your Windows 11 computer, it plays a short sound before you log in. Some people like it. Others find it annoying. If you want to turn it off, you can do it easily. This guide will show you how, step by step.

Turn Off Windows Startup Sound Using Settings

Why do this? The Settings method is the safest and easiest way for anyone to disable the startup sound.

What happens when done? Your PC will start quietly without the Windows startup sound playing.

Follow these easy steps to disable the startup sound:

  1. Open Windows Settings. Click the Start menu (the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner), then click Settings. Or, press Windows key + I on your keyboard to open Settings quickly.
  2. In Settings, click on System on the left side.
  3. Then, click Sound on the right.

Turn Off Windows Startup Sound Using Registry Editor (Advanced)

Why do this? This method gives you another way to turn off the startup sound. It works directly with your computer’s settings files.

What happens when done? Your startup sound will be disabled and stay off even after updates.

⚠️ Note: This method is advanced. Only try it if you feel comfortable. Making wrong changes in the Registry can cause problems. Always be careful.

  1. Click the Search icon (magnifying glass) on the taskbar, type regedit, and press Enter.

    Opening Registry Editor
  2. ⚠️ ADMIN PRIVILEGES REQUIRED: If a warning pops up, click Yes to continue.
  3. In the Registry Editor window, use the left side panel to go to this folder path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\BootAnimation
  4. On the right side, find DisableStartupSound and double-click it.

    Registry path
  5. Change the number in the box to 1 to turn off the startup sound. (Setting it to 0 will turn it back on.)

    Change registry value
  6. Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

Important: Always be careful when editing the registry. It’s a good idea to back up your registry before making changes.

Summary

You can easily turn off the Windows 11 startup sound if you don’t want to hear it.

The easiest way is using the Settings app. This method is safe and simple for everyone.

If you like, you can also use the Registry Editor method. But only try it if you feel comfortable with advanced settings.

Once turned off, your PC will start quietly without the startup sound.

Enjoy a quieter start to your Windows 11 computer!
