How to Enable Automatic Page File Size in Windows 11

This guide explains how to let Windows 11 automatically manage the size of your system page file.

Why do this? The page file is a section of your hard drive that acts like extra memory. When your computer runs out of physical RAM, it uses this file to keep things running. If you have set this manually in the past, your computer might be struggling to manage its resources correctly.

What happens when done? Windows will take control of the file size again. It will adjust the file based on your disk space and speed, which often helps your computer run faster and more reliably.

There are many reasons why a computer might feel slow, such as system update issues, starting up many programs, and system drivers issues.

How to Enable Automatic Page File Size

To change these settings, you will need to access your system configuration. Please note that these steps require admin privileges.

First, open your Settings menu. You can do this by pressing the Windows key + I on your keyboard, or by clicking Start > Settings.

Once the Settings window is open, click on System in the left menu. On the right side of the screen, scroll down and click on About.

Check the box that says Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. If it was already checked, you are all set. If it was not checked, select it now.

After checking the box, restart your computer by going to Start > Power > Restart.

Summary

By letting Windows handle the page file automatically, you ensure the system can balance its memory needs without manual interference. This is the default setting for a reason, as it allows your computer to adapt to different tasks and storage conditions. If your PC has been feeling sluggish, resetting this to automatic is a great first step to restoring performance.
