How to View Microsoft Edge Policies

This guide explains how to see which rules, or “policies,” are currently controlling your Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft Edge Microsoft Edge browser is the built-in browser for Windows 11. While you can switch to their preferred or favorite browser to another browser whenever you like, Edge is built on the same technology as Google Chrome. Because of this, it uses a system of settings called policies to manage how it behaves on home computers or at work.

Why check these policies?

Sometimes, you might find that certain buttons or features in Edge are missing or grayed out. This usually happens because an administrator has turned them off. Checking your policies helps you see exactly what settings are being forced on your browser.

What happens when you are done?

Once you finish these steps, you will see a clear list of every rule currently active in your browser. This list will help you troubleshoot why your browser is acting in a specific way.

How to see your Edge policies

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Click into the address bar at the top of the window.
  3. Type or paste the following command and press Enter: edge://policy
  4. You will now see a page titled “Policies.” This page displays all the rules currently active on your computer.
  5. If you want to see only the rules that are currently active, uncheck the box labeled “Show policies with no value.”

Note: Depending on how your computer is set up, some of these policies may require admin privileges to change. You can view them as a standard user, but you cannot modify them unless you have administrator access to the computer.

Summary

Microsoft Edge uses policies to manage browser features. If you notice settings that you cannot change, you can use the edge://policy command to view the list of active restrictions. This is a quick and easy way to understand why your browser is behaving a certain way or why specific features might be hidden.
