How to Add JPEG XL Support in Windows 11
This guide explains how to add support for JPEG XL (.jxl) image files to Windows 11.
Why do this? JPEG XL is a modern file format. It makes images look better while keeping the file size small. It is a great improvement over the standard JPEG format.
What happens when done? Your computer will be able to open and view JPEG XL images directly in File Explorer, just like any other photo.
Windows 11 does not support this format by default. You need to install a small piece of software called an extension to see these files.
Method 1: Use the Microsoft Store
The easiest way to get this support is through the Microsoft Store.
- Go to the JPEG XL Image Extension page in the Microsoft Store.
- Click the button that says “View in Store.”
- Once the Store app opens, click the “Get” button to install the extension.

You can also use this direct link: PEG XL Image Extension.
Method 2: Use the Winget Command
You can also use the command line to install the extension quickly.
Note: This method requires admin privileges if your system settings restrict software installation.
To do this, open the Windows Terminal and type the following command:
winget install 9mzprth5c0tb
Press the Enter key to run the command and finish the installation.
Summary
- JPEG XL files offer better quality and smaller sizes than regular JPEGs.
- Windows 11 cannot open these files out of the box.
- You can add support by installing an extension from the Microsoft Store or by using the
wingetcommand. - After the setup is complete, you can view your images in File Explorer without extra work.
