How to Enable or Disable Windows Spotlight in Windows 11
Windows Spotlight Windows Spotlight lets your desktop background and lock screen connect to Microsoft servers to download random images from around the world. Windows uses this feature so you can set their desktop background with Spotlight collections, save Spotlight images for use, and see new photos on your screen.
Why do this? You might want to turn it off to use your own photos, save system resources, or keep your data private. You might want to turn it on for a fresh, changing desktop look.
What happens when done? Your desktop wallpaper will either start showing random images from Microsoft or stop showing them, depending on your choice. You must restart your computer for these changes to take effect.
Enable or Disable Spotlight using Group Policy
Note: This method requires admin privileges.
- Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Go to: User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Cloud Content.

Click on Cloud Content on the left. Double-click Turn off Spotlight collection on Desktop on the right.
- Not Configured or Disabled: This turns Spotlight ON.
- Enabled: This turns Spotlight OFF.

Save your settings and restart your PC.
Enable or Disable Spotlight using the Registry Editor
Note: This method requires admin privileges. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, stick to the Group Policy method.
If you cannot use the Group Policy Editor, use the Windows Registry Editor or Windows Registry. Open the Windows Registry and go to this path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CloudContentIf you do not see the CloudContent folder, right-click the Windows folder, select New, and create a Key named CloudContent.

Right-click in the empty space on the right side, select New, then DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it DisableSpotlightCollectionOnDesktop.
Double-click the new item, set the Base to Decimal, and change the Value data:
- Type 1 to disable the feature.
- Delete the
DisableSpotlightCollectionOnDesktopkey to enable the feature.

Restart your computer to finish.
