Windows Spotlight Windows Spotlight lets your desktop background and lock screen connect to Microsoft servers to download random images from around the world. Windows uses this feature so you can set their desktop background with Spotlight collections, save Spotlight images for use, and see new photos on your screen.

Why do this? You might want to turn it off to use your own photos, save system resources, or keep your data private. You might want to turn it on for a fresh, changing desktop look.

What happens when done? Your desktop wallpaper will either start showing random images from Microsoft or stop showing them, depending on your choice. You must restart your computer for these changes to take effect.

Enable or Disable Spotlight using Group Policy

Note: This method requires admin privileges.

  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  2. Go to: User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Cloud Content.

If you cannot use the Group Policy Editor, use the  Windows Registry Editor or Windows Registry. Open the Windows Registry and go to this path:

If you do not see the CloudContent folder, right-click the Windows folder, select New, and create a Key named CloudContent.

  • Type 1 to disable the feature.
  • Delete the DisableSpotlightCollectionOnDesktop key to enable the feature.

Summary

You can manage Windows Spotlight by changing a setting in the Group Policy Editor or by adding a specific value to your Windows Registry. Disabling the feature can help your computer run slightly faster and gives you full control over your desktop background, while enabling it keeps your screen looking fresh with new images automatically.
