How to Open File Explorer to OneDrive in Windows 11
This guide explains how to make File Explorer open directly to your OneDrive folder in Windows 11. By default, File Explorer usually opens to Quick Access. You can change this to show your cloud storage instead.
Why do this?
If you keep most of your work in the cloud, having File Explorer open straight to your OneDrive saves you time. It puts your most important files right in front of you the moment you start looking for them.
What happens when done?
Once you finish these steps, every time you open File Explorer, it will automatically show the contents of your OneDrive folder instead of the default view.
Before you begin
Make sure you have set up the OneDrive desktop app on your computer first. If you have not done this yet, follow the instructions here: How to set up OneDrive in Windows 11.
Setting File Explorer to open to OneDrive
You do not need special permissions for these steps. Simply follow these instructions:
- Open File Explorer.
- Click the three dots (…) in the top menu to open the Folder Options.

- In the Folder Options window, look for the dropdown menu labeled Open File Explorer to:.
- Select your OneDrive folder from the list.

- Click the OK button to save your changes.

Understanding Files On-Demand
OneDrive uses a feature called Files On-Demand. This helps you save space on your hard drive. Files appear in your local folder but are only downloaded when you open them. You can see the sync status by looking at the icons next to your files. A green checkmark means the file is on your computer. A blue cloud icon means it is only in the cloud.
Troubleshooting Common Sync Issues
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| OneDrive missing from Navigation Pane | Right-click the Navigation Pane and select Show all folders. |
| Sync status stuck | Restart the OneDrive sync client from the system tray. |
| Shared folder not showing | Go to OneDrive online and click Add shortcut to my files. |
Summary
By changing your File Explorer settings, you can skip the default view and jump straight into your OneDrive files. This streamlines your workflow and keeps your cloud storage accessible. Remember to keep your sync client updated to avoid errors with shared libraries or file access.
Why is my OneDrive folder missing from File Explorer?
If your OneDrive folder is missing, the sync client may not be running. Check your system tray for the blue cloud icon. If it is missing, search for OneDrive in your Start menu to launch it. You may also need to check your Navigation Pane settings to ensure it is visible.
How do I add a shared folder to my local File Explorer?
To add a shared folder, log in to the OneDrive website. Find the shared folder, right-click it, and select Add shortcut to my files. Once you do this, the folder will automatically appear in your local OneDrive folder on your computer, allowing you to access it through File Explorer.
What is the difference between OneDrive online and File Explorer view?
OneDrive online is the web-based interface where you manage account settings and shared links. File Explorer view is the local integration on your Windows 11 PC. It allows you to manage files just like any other folder on your hard drive, using the same familiar drag-and-drop tools.
