The newly released version of Google Chrome has a battery-saving feature designed to extend your device’s battery life. In addition, when enabled, some background activities are limited, as well as visual effects and video frame rates.

The battery-saving feature isn’t enabled just yet when you upgrade. To use it, you must manually enable it using Chrome’s feature flags.

Below is how to enable the battery-saving feature when using the Google Chrome web browser today.

How to turn on or off Google Chrome battery saving mode

As described above, the newly released version of Google Chrome has a battery-saving feature designed to extend your device’s battery life. Some background activities are limited when enabled, as well as visual effects and video frame rates.

Here’s how to enable it in Google Chrome.

First, open the Google Chrome browser and search for updates. You must be on version 108 and up to see the battery-saving feature.

Once updated, relaunch the Google Chrome browser. Then, type in the feature flags below in the address or browser search box.

Next, use the search box on the flags page to search for battery saver. Under the Available features, locate the highlighted feature to enable battery saver, then select Enabled.

Alternatively, type in the flag address below to go directly to the Battery saver mode feature settings.

Once you enable it, you will be prompted to relaunch the browser to apply changes.

After Chrome restarts, click the 3-dot menu button in the top right and select “Settings.”

You can also browse directly to the Performance tab using the settings address below:

chrome://settings/performance

On the Settings page, select the new “Performance” tab on the left. On the right, toggle the “Energy Saver” button to the On position to enable. 

To disable it, go to the Performance tab and toggle the button to the Off position.

That should do it!
