Have you ever wished you could close a frozen app directly from your taskbar? Windows 11 now allows you to right-click an icon on your taskbar to instantly end a task. This feature is hidden by default, but you can turn it on easily.

Why use this feature?

Sometimes apps freeze or stop responding. Instead of opening the Task Manager, this shortcut lets you close the program quickly with just two clicks.

What happens when done?

Once enabled, right-clicking any application icon on your taskbar will show an “End task” option in the menu. Selecting it will force that program to close immediately.

How to enable or disable End Task

This feature was added in the most recent Windows 11 Dev build 23430 and is now rolling out to Windows 11 users, including those not in the Dev build program. Follow these steps to change your settings:

  1. Open the Settings app. You can do this by clicking the Start menu or by pressing the Windows key + I on your keyboard to launch the Windows Settings app.
  2. Click on System in the left-hand menu. (Note: Depending on your update version, you may need to navigate to the Settings app section).

  1. Find and select the For developers tile on the right side of the screen.

  1. Look for the End Task option. Toggle the switch to On to enable it, or Off to disable it.

Close the Settings app once you have made your choice. The change takes effect immediately.

Summary

Enabling the “End Task” option gives you a faster way to manage unresponsive apps directly from your taskbar. By navigating to the For developers menu within your system settings, you can toggle this helpful shortcut on or off whenever you like. This is a great way to keep your desktop experience smooth and efficient.
