Do you use USB drives or external hard drives with your Windows 11 computer? Then you need to know how to safely remove them. Windows has settings that control how your computer handles these devices. Changing these settings can make your drives easier to use or faster.
Why Does Removal Policy Matter?
The removal policy tells your PC how to treat external drives when they are plugged in. There are two main choices:
- Quick Removal: You can unplug your USB drive or external drive anytime without using the “Safely Remove Hardware” option. Windows writes data to the drive right away. It is safe to remove quickly.
- Better Performance: Windows saves data in batches to make file transfers faster. But you need to use the “Safely Remove Hardware” option before unplugging. This stops you from losing data.
How to Change Removal Policy Using Settings
- Open the Settings app. Click the Start Menu and select Settings. Or press
Windows key + Ion your keyboard. - In Settings, click System on the left side.

- On the right, click on Storage.

- Scroll down and expand Advanced storage settings. Then click Disks & volumes.

- Find your external drive in the list. Click it. Then click Properties.

- Under Removal policy, choose one of these options:
- Quick Removal (safe to unplug anytime)
- Performance (better speed but use “Safely Remove Hardware” before unplugging)

- Close the Settings app when you are done.
How to Change Removal Policy Using Device Manager
You can also change this setting from the Device Manager if you prefer:
- ADMIN PRIVILEGES REQUIRED – Open Device Manager by searching for it in the Start menu.
- Find your external drive under Disk drives.
- Right-click your external drive and select Properties.
- Go to the Policies tab.
- Choose one of these options:
- Quick removal (default): unplug safely anytime
- Better performance: faster but use “Safely Remove Hardware” first

- Click OK to save.
Summary
Quick Removal: This is best for everyday use. You can unplug without extra steps.
Better Performance: This gives faster data writing. But always use “Safely Remove Hardware” before unplugging.
You can easily switch between these options in Settings or Device Manager. Choosing the right policy helps keep your data safe. It also keeps your drives working well.
