This post shows students and new users how to select multiple files and folders when using Windows 11.

When working in Windows 11, there are some tips and tricks you might want to learn and know how to do right away. Selecting a file or folder with a mouse or a touchpad may seem too easy and boring to write about. However, learning these tips can help you with other tasks, like renaming, moving, and deleting files and folders.

In Windows, to select a single file or folder, click on it or tab it when using a touch screen. When selecting multiple files and folders, hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard while selecting each file or folder name.

While holding down the CTRL on your keyboard, each time you select a file or folder, it stays highlighted, clicking next, and so forth. When done, all the selected files or folders should stay highlighted, ready for the next action.

Now, you can delete, move, copy, and perform other basic tasks.

To select all files and folders, select the top or folder in the list, then hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard. While holding it down, select the very last file or folder. Doing this will also select everything in between.

You can also simply select all files and folders by pressing the CTRL + A key on your keyboard.

How to select all files and folders in Windows 11

We gave you a brief overview of selecting the files and folders above. In Windows 11, the steps below will also come in handy.

To select all files and folders in Windows 11, use the toolbar. Click on the toolbar’s ellipsis (three dots), then select Select all commands on the context menu.

This will select all the content in the folder.

You can perform basic tasks like copying, moving, deleting, and other commands.

While holding down the CTRL key, begin selecting each file and folder. Every item you select will be highlighted. When you’re done, all should be selected.

Hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard, then select the top and bottom. Everything in between will also be selected.

That should do it!

This no longer works in Windows 11. Frustrating that the author of this article is still referencing previous Windows conventions.

Ok, all – I figured it out. You have to disable the “view checkbox” feature in Folder Options. Then, the shift-select feature works to select multiple files. From your folder view, click the three dots on the right of the menu bar. Select Options>View. Find “Use Checkboxes to Select Items” and uncheck it. Now using the shift key to select multiple files/folders works as it used to.
