How to Enable Dark Mode in Outlook for Windows 11
Dark mode in Outlook for Windows 11 changes the email app background from bright white to dark gray and black to cut down on screen glare. This theme switch helps stop eye strain when you check messages late at night or in dim rooms.
Recent versions of Microsoft 365 and Windows 11 let you turn on this dark look with just a few clicks in the settings menu. OLED laptop and monitor screens also save battery power when you use dark colors instead of bright white.
Windows 11 has two different Outlook apps, and each one has its own dark mode setting. The steps below cover both, so first work out which one you are running.
Open the new Outlook app, click the sun or moon icon in the top right corner, and select Dark from the menu. The theme applies with no restart needed. For Classic Outlook, click File, select Office Account, then choose Black or Dark Gray under Office Theme.
How to Identify Your Outlook Version
Knowing your Outlook version is the first step to enable dark mode in Outlook for Windows 11, and it’s easy to check. The two versions look different, so you can usually tell at a glance.
The new Outlook has a simpler ribbon with tabs such as Home, View and Help, and it has no File menu. Classic Outlook has the File tab in the top left corner of the window. If you see a New Outlook toggle in the top right corner, you are in Classic Outlook, because the new app does not have that switch.
Fastest Method: New Outlook for 🪟 Windows 11
The new Outlook for Windows makes switching themes very simple. You do not need admin privileges for these steps, and you do not need to restart the app or Windows. The change applies as soon as you pick a theme.
- Open the Outlook app. Wait for your mailbox to load. You should see your folder list on the left and your messages in the middle.
Open the new Outlook app in Windows 11 - Look for the Appearance icon (sun or moon) in the top right corner. If you cannot see it, your build may not have this shortcut yet. Use the second method below instead.
- Click the icon to cycle through Light, Dark, or System settings. After you choose Dark, the window should turn dark gray and black straight away. Pick Light again at any time to undo it.
Detailed Settings for New Outlook
- Click the Settings (gear icon) in the top right. A Settings window opens on top of your mailbox.

Classic Outlook: Office Theme Settings
Changing this will affect other Office apps like Word and Excel, because they all share one Office theme. If you only want Outlook to look dark, use the new Outlook instead. No restart is needed for the change to apply.
- Open Outlook and click File in the top left. The Backstage view opens and replaces your mailbox.
- Select Office Account. On some builds this page may be labeled Account. Your product and user information appears on the right.
- Under Office Theme, choose Black or Dark Gray. Black is the darkest option. Dark Gray is a bit softer. Click the back arrow at the top left to return to your mailbox, where the new theme should already be showing. To undo it, return to the same list and pick another theme, such as Colorful.
Syncing with 🪟 Windows 11 System Settings
Go to Settings Personalization Colors and set Choose your mode to Dark. If you select Use system settings inside the Outlook Appearance menu, Outlook will switch whenever Windows switches. This works well if you also use a scheduled or automatic light and dark change on your PC.
