This article explains how to enable or disable the auto-adjust video brightness feature based on lighting in Windows 11.
Windows has a new setting, “Adjust video based on lighting around me,” that automatically adjusts the brightness of videos based on the ambient lighting conditions detected by your device’s sensors. It helps to improve viewing experiences by enhancing visibility and reducing eye strain in different lighting environments.
When enabled, this feature dynamically modifies the video brightness to ensure it remains clear and comfortable to watch, whether in a bright room or a dimly lit environment.
If your device doesn’t have a light sensor, then you will not have the Adjust video based on lighting around me setting available.
Turn on or off “Adjust video based on lighting around me” in Windows
As mentioned, a new feature in Windows that automatically adjusts videos based on lighting conditions can be turned on or off.
Here’s how to do it.
First, open the Windows Settings app.
You can do that by clicking on the Start menu and selecting Settings. Or press the keyboard shortcut (Windows key + I) to launch the Settings app.
When the Setting app opens, click the Personalization button on the left.

On the right, select the Video playback tile to expand it.

On the Apps > Video playback settings pane, select the “Adjust video based on lighting around me” tile. Then, toggle the button to the On or Off position to enable or disable it.
Note: You won’t see the settings if your device doesn’t have a light sensor.
Close the Settings app after making your changes.
Auto-adjust video brightness based using the Registry Editor
Another way to enable or disable the auto-adjust video brightness is to use the Windows Registry editor.
First, open the Windows Registry and navigate to the folder key path below.
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\VideoSettings
Next, double-click the (REG_DWORD) “EnableOutsideModeFeature” name on the VideoSettings key’s right pane to open it.
Then, enter a value 1
to turn on the auto-adjust video brightness feature.
Enter 0
to turn it off.
If you do not see the “EnableOutsideModeFeature” item, right-click a blank area and create a new DWORD (32-bit) registry item.
Then, enter 1
or 0
to enable or disable it.

Save your changes and restart your computer.
That should do it!
