This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to install the new Microsoft Edge browser for Linux on Ubuntu 20.08 | 18.04.

The new Microsoft Edge browser has adopted the Chromium open-source project code base, offering better web compatibility and performance over the legacy Edge.

The edge browser is a cross-platform that supports all Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. If you’re currently using Edge and want to learn how to install the new Edge in Ubuntu, the steps below should show you how to do it.

Those who can’t wait for the preview version of Edge (beta), which will be released in about six weeks from today, or the stable version for release next year can install it from the dev branch.

The dev channel offers the latest builds for Linux but not a stable preview or beta version that’s more polished for general testing.

Microsoft promised to bring Edge to Linux so it can be used across every central platform, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux.

Edge will be available in traditional Linux package formats (.rpm, .deb) and will support a wide range of distros, Ubuntu included.

Install Edge on Ubuntu

To get the latest dev version of Edge on Ubuntu, simply go to the link below and download the .deb package for Ubuntu.

Then select the Dev branch. If the Beta channel is available, choose that version instead.

When prompted what to do with the File, choose to Save the File.

After downloading the File (most likely) in your downloads folder, browse to the folder, then right-click the downloaded File and choose Open With Software Install.

That should take you to the software install page for the Edge package. When you click the Install button, it should prompt you to enter your password to continue the installation.

Once done, you should be able to go to the Activities dashboard, search for Edge, and launch.

That’s it!

Install Microsoft Edge via the Command line
