How to Enable Read Receipts in Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is a popular app used for chatting, video calls, and working with others. Sometimes, you may want to know if someone has seen your message. Conversely, you might want to keep your reading habits private.
Why use Read Receipts?
Read receipts show a small icon when your message has been viewed by the recipient. Enabling this feature lets others know you have seen their message, which can help prevent unnecessary follow-up questions. Disabling it gives you more privacy if you want to read messages without notifying the sender immediately.
What happens when done?
Once you change this setting, your status will update across all your Teams devices. If turned on, people will see when you read their chats. If turned off, they will no longer see that notification.
How to Enable or Disable Read Receipts
Follow these simple steps to change your privacy settings in Microsoft Teams.
- Open the Start menu and find Microsoft Teams in your All Apps list to launch it.

You can also launch the app from the Taskbar or Taskbar overflow.

- If a small window opens, click the expansion button on the menu bar to see the full Teams window.

- Locate the Settings and more (…) button near your profile picture and select Settings.

- Click the Privacy tab on the left side of the screen.
- Find the Read receipts section.
- Toggle the switch to On to enable receipts, or Off to disable them.

Close the Teams app when you are finished. Note: This process does not require administrative privileges.
Summary
Read receipts are a helpful way to manage communication expectations in Microsoft Teams. By following the steps above, you can easily toggle this feature on or off based on your privacy needs. Whether you want to confirm you have seen a message or prefer to read in silence, you now have full control over your status.
