How to Enable Read Receipts in Microsoft Teams
You enable read receipts in Microsoft Teams to confirm when recipients have viewed your messages.
Read receipts, or message read status, show a visual cue indicating when someone has opened and read your chat messages within Microsoft Teams. This feature provides direct confirmation that your message has been seen.
When enabled, you’ll see a “seen” icon next to your sent messages once the recipient views them. This works both ways, so others will see when you have read their messages too. For this to function, you must activate it within your Teams settings. This confirmation is particularly useful in busy Teams environments, helping you avoid sending unnecessary follow-up messages.
Open Microsoft Teams, go to Settings, then Privacy, and toggle Read receipts to On. On mobile, tap your profile, then Settings, Messaging, and toggle Read receipts. This feature only works for private chats, not channels.
What Counts as ‘Read’?
In Microsoft Teams, a message is marked as ‘read’ when you open the chat window where the message was sent. If you are using the desktop app, the message must be visible on your screen. Simply having the app open in the background does not trigger a read receipt.
How to Enable or Disable Read Receipts on Desktop
You can turn read receipts on or off in the Microsoft Teams desktop app with a quick setting change.
- Open the Start menu and launch Microsoft Teams.

Turn on or off automatically starting Microsoft Teams - If the app is minimized, click the expansion button on the menu bar.

Turn on or off automatically starting Microsoft Teams - Click the Settings and more (…) button near your profile picture and select Settings.

Turn on or off automatically starting Microsoft Teams - Click the Privacy tab on the left side of the screen.

Turn on or off automatically starting Microsoft Teams - Find the Read receipts section and toggle the switch to On or Off.

Note: This process does not require administrative privileges.
How to Enable Read Receipts on Mobile (iOS/Android)
You can also manage your Teams chat settings on the go using the mobile app.
- Open the Microsoft Teams app on your phone.
- Tap your profile picture or the More menu in the top-left corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Messaging.
- Toggle the Read receipts switch to your preferred setting.
Functional Limitations and Privacy
Read receipts in Teams only work for one-on-one chats and group chats, not in regular team channels.
Admin-Level Policy Settings
Sometimes, an IT administrator may restrict these settings. If you cannot find the read receipts option, your organization may have enforced a global policy. Admins can manage these settings via the Microsoft Teams admin center by adjusting the Messaging policy. This ensures consistent privacy standards across the company.
Summary
You can manage your read receipts in Teams easily through the Privacy settings, choosing whether to keep your message status private or visible.
Do read receipts work in Teams channels?
No, read receipts do not work in standard Teams channels. This feature is currently limited to private 1-on-1 conversations and group chats. If you are communicating within a channel, you will not see a ‘seen’ status regardless of your privacy settings.
Can I see who read my message in a group chat?
Yes, in group chats, you can hover over your sent message to see a list of people who have viewed it. This is only visible if both you and the other participants have read receipts enabled in your respective privacy settings.
Why are my read receipts not showing?
If your receipts are not showing, check if the feature is enabled in your settings. Also, verify that your organization has not disabled this feature via an admin-level policy. If you are in a channel or the recipient has disabled their own receipts, the status will not appear.
