Closed captions turn spoken audio into text on your screen. This feature helps people who are hard of hearing or those who want to watch videos without sound. Windows 11 includes this feature by default, making it easy to follow along with any video content.

Why use closed captions?

Closed captions are essential for accessibility. They ensure that video content is inclusive for everyone. They are also useful when you are in a quiet environment, like a library or a shared office, where playing audio is not allowed.

How to turn on closed captions during a video

If you are watching a video that supports captions, you can turn them on quickly:

  1. Right-click or tap and hold on the video screen.
  2. Look for the CC icon in the menu bar that appears at the bottom.
  3. Click the CC icon to enable captions.
  4. Select your preferred language if prompted.

How to change how captions look

Windows 11 lets you change the font, color, and size of your captions so they are easier to read.

To change these settings:

  1. Press the Windows key + I on your keyboard to open Settings. Alternatively, go to Start %%LNK0%% > Settings.

What happens when you are done?

Once you save your changes in the settings menu, Windows 11 remembers your preferences. Every time you turn on closed captions in the future, they will appear in the specific style and colors you chose.

Summary

Closed captions make videos easier to understand by showing text on the screen. You can turn them on or off directly from your video player by clicking the CC icon. You can also personalize the look of the captions, such as changing the text color or background, through the Accessibility section in your Windows Settings. These changes are saved automatically for all your future viewing.
