This article explains how to turn “Automatic media download” on or off in the Telegram Desktop app on Windows 11.

Telegram is a cross-platform instant messaging app that focuses on speed and security. It allows users to send text and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share photos and videos with end-to-end encryption to help ensure user privacy and security.

When you install and set up Telegram on Windows, you can choose to start it up automatically when signing into Windows, turn spell checker on or off, and more.

When you use Telegram on Windows, you can also configure to enable or disable “Automatic media download.” If enabled, photos and files in personal and group chats and channels will automatically download in the Telegram folder in the system Downloads.

You may want to turn “Automatic media download” on or off in Telegram to control the amount of data usage and storage space on your device. If you have limited data or storage space, disabling automatic media downloads can help you save on both.

On the other hand, if you have enough data and storage space, enabling automatic media download can save you time by automatically downloading media files to access offline.

Turn automatic media download on or off in Telegram

As mentioned above, users can enable or disable automatic media download in the Telegram app on Windows.

If enabled, photos and files in personal and group chats and channels will automatically be downloaded to the system downloads folder.

Here’s how to do it.

First, launch the app by clicking the Start menu and selecting it on the All Apps list.

You can also launch the app from the Taskbar or Taskbar overflow.

When the app opens, click the Menu button at the top left of your screen.

On the Menu pane, select the Settings (gear) button.

On the Settings page, select the Advanced menu to expand it.

On the expanded Advanced menu, under Automatic media download, select each of the categories:

  • In private chats
  • In groups
  • In channels

For each category, select the Photos and Files tile. Then, toggle the switch buttons to the On position to enable automatically downloading media content.

To disable, toggle the button switch to the Off position.

Return to the previous page, select the other category (ex. In groups), and do the same above.

That should do it!
