If you use a laptop, you likely use multi-finger gestures to move around Windows 11. These shortcuts help you with opening search, opening the Notification center, or changing your volume. You may have changed your swipe or zoom settings and now want to go back to how things used to be.

Why reset your touchpad gestures?

Sometimes your touchpad might stop responding to multi-finger swipes. You might have changed settings by accident. Resetting helps if your gestures feel slow or broken. It clears out old data that might be causing errors.

What happens when you reset?

Windows 11 will delete all your custom settings. Your touchpad will return to the factory state. This is the same state it was in when you first bought your laptop. It does not delete your files.

How to reset touchpad gestures in Windows 11

You can use the built-in reset button for a quick fix. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.

  1. Click Bluetooth & devices on the left.
  2. Select the Touchpad tile.

Note: You must have administrator privileges to change these settings.

Find the main toggle at the top. Turn it Off. A Reset button will appear. Click it to finish.

Advanced Troubleshooting: Device Manager

If the reset button does not work, you may need to fix the driver. (Requires Admin Privileges)

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click your HID-compliant mouse or touchpad driver and select Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.

Registry Fix for Touchpad Issues

Warning: Back up your registry before making changes. (Requires Admin Privileges)

You can reset settings manually in the Registry Editor. Press Windows key + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

Delete the keys inside this folder to force a reset. Restart your PC afterward.

Difference Between Precision and Standard Drivers

A Precision Touchpad is designed by Microsoft for smooth, multi-finger gestures. Standard drivers often rely on third-party software like Synaptics. Precision drivers are built into Windows 11, making them more stable and easier to configure.

Summary

Resetting your touchpad is a great way to fix navigation issues. You can use the Settings app for a simple reset. For deeper problems, try reinstalling the driver in Device Manager. Always back up your system before editing the registry. These steps ensure your gestures work exactly as intended.

Why are my touchpad settings missing in Windows 11?

If your settings are missing, your driver might be corrupted or disabled. This often happens after a major Windows update. Check the Device Manager to see if your I2C HID Device or HID-compliant touchpad driver is showing an error icon or is hidden from the list.
