How to Enable or Disable Website Typo Protection in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge is the web browser that comes built into Windows 11. You can switch to their preferred or favorite browser if you prefer to use a different one. Edge is built using the same technology as Google Chrome.
Why does this matter? If you type a website address incorrectly, you might end up on a fake website. Criminals build these sites to steal your personal information. This puts your computer and your data at risk.
What happens when done? Microsoft Edge has a feature called Website typo protection. If you misspell the name of a popular website, Edge detects the mistake. It will then steer you toward the real, safe website instead of the fake one.
How to Enable or Disable Website Typo Protection
Follow these steps to manage this setting in Microsoft Edge:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the Settings and more button. These are the three dots in the top right corner. You can also press Alt+F on your keyboard.
- Select Settings from the menu.

- On the left side of the screen, click Privacy, search, and services.

- Scroll down to the Security section.
- Find the option labeled Website typo protection.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it On or Off.

When this feature is On, Edge protects you from fake websites. When it is Off, you do not have this extra layer of security.
Advanced Method: Using the Windows Registry
You can also change this setting using the Windows Registry. This is a more technical method.
⚠️ Admin Privileges Required
- Open the Windows Registry on your computer.
- Go to this folder path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
If you do not see an Edge folder, right-click on the Microsoft folder and create a new folder named Edge.

- Right-click in the empty space on the right side of the Edge folder.
- Select New and then DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name this new key:
TyposquattingCheckerEnabled
- Double-click on the new key you just created.
- In the Value data field, enter:
1 to enable Website typo protection
0 to disable Website typo protection
- Click OK to save your changes.

Your changes will start working immediately.
Summary
Website typo protection is a smart security tool in Microsoft Edge. It prevents you from landing on fake websites if you make a typo. You can toggle this on or off in the Edge settings menu. Advanced users can also manage it via the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge by adjusting the TyposquattingCheckerEnabled value. We recommend keeping this feature turned on to stay safe online.
