This article shows you how to turn on or off the “Always open favorites in new tab” feature in Microsoft Edge.

Why This Matters

Microsoft Edge is the default browser in Windows 11. However, users can  switch to their preferred or favorite browser anytime. Edge is based on Chromium, just like Google Chrome and many other browsers today.

You can show or hide the favorites bar in Microsoft Edge. When the favorites bar is turned on, all your favorite websites appear there. You can organize, rearrange, and edit them whenever you want.

By default, when you click a link in the favorites bar, it opens in the same Edge window. This takes you away from the page you’re viewing.

Starting with Microsoft Edge version 110, you can change this behavior. You can now choose to open favorites in new tabs instead.

What Happens When Done

When you enable this feature, clicking any favorite link opens it in a new tab. Your current page stays open in the background. When you disable it, favorites open in the same window like before.

How to Enable or Disable This Feature

Starting with Microsoft Edge version 110, you can turn this feature on or off.

Note: This feature is rolling out to users. It should be available to everyone once Edge version 110 is fully released.

Step 1: Open Edge Settings

First, open Microsoft Edge. Click the Settings and More button (the 3 dots in the top right corner). You can also press Alt + F on your keyboard. Then, select Settings from the menu.

That’s all you need to do!

Summary

Turning the “Always open favorites in new tab” feature on or off in Microsoft Edge is simple and quick. When it’s on, your favorite links open in new tabs, keeping your current page in the background. When it’s off, favorites open in the same window. You can customize this setting anytime through the Appearance section in Edge Settings. This gives you control over your browsing experience based on how you like to work.
