This post shows students and new users steps to turn on or off the “Get me up to date” settings in Windows 11. By default, Windows automatically downloads the latest updates and typically schedules an install if everything works.
Windows updates get the latest fixes and security improvements, helping your device run efficiently while staying protected. However, when you update your Windows device, you’ll be prompted, in most cases, to restart it so the updates apply entirely.
Windows Update also has a feature that allows users to get up to date as soon as possible by turning on the “Get me up to date” settings. When enabled, Windows prompts you to restart as quickly as possible (even during active hours) to finish updating. This feature will also notify you 15 minutes before resuming so you can make sure your device is on and plugged in.
If you don’t want to wait for Windows Update to schedule an install and wish to get updated as quickly as possible, then turning this feature on should help.
How to enable or disable Get me up to date in Windows 11
As mentioned above, Windows Update also has a feature that allows users to get up to date as soon as possible by turning on the “Get me up to date” setting.
Below is how to turn this feature On or Off.
First, open the Windows Settings app.
Then, select Windows Update on the left and the Advanced options tile on the right to expand it.

On the “Windows Update > Advanced options” settings pane, select the “Get me up to date” tile. Then, toggle the button switch to the On position to enable it.
To disable it, toggle the switch button to the Off position.

Exit the Settings app when you’re done.
Turn on or off Get me up to date using the Windows Registry Editor
Yet another way to disable “Get me up to date” settings is to use the Windows Registry editor.
First, open the Windows Registry and navigate to the folder key path below.
Disable or enable for current user:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings
Next, double-click the IsExpedited (REG_DWORD) name on the System key’s right pane to open it.
Then, enter a value 1
to enable restart notifications after Windows updates.
Enter a value 0
to disable restart notifications after Windows updates.
If you do not see the “IsExpedited” item, right-click a blank area and create a new DWORD (32-bit) registry item.
Then, enter the name “IsExpedited” and enter a desired value to enable or disable it.

Warning: Editing the Registry can be risky and may cause irreversible damage to your installation if not done correctly. It’s recommended that you back up your PC before proceeding.
Save your changes and restart your computer.

You can close the Windows Settings app.
That should do it!
