You can turn automatic upgrades to passkeys on or off in Microsoft Edge to manage how your old logins transition to this newer, more secure method.

Passkeys are a passwordless authentication method that uses cryptographic key pairs to verify your identity, offering enhanced security against phishing and credential stuffing attacks.

Starting with Microsoft Edge version 121, this setting allows the browser to proactively suggest or automatically convert existing saved passwords to passkeys when you visit compatible websites.

Enabling this feature helps you adopt passkeys more quickly for your online accounts, simplifying your login process and reducing reliance on traditional passwords.

Turning it off ensures that Edge will not automatically attempt to upgrade your passwords to passkeys, giving you full manual control over the transition.

Here’s how to change this setting in Microsoft Edge.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click the three dots icon () in the top right corner. This is the Settings and more menu. Then, click on Settings.
  3. In the left menu, click on Passwords and autofill. On the right side, click on Microsoft Password Manager.

If you don’t see a menu on the left, click the three lines icon () in the top left corner. Or, make the Edge window wider.

  4. Click on More settings.
  5. Find the option called Automatically upgrade to passkeys. You can turn it On or Off here.

Note: This setting only works if Ask to save passwords and passkeys is turned on.

  6. You can now close the Settings tab in Microsoft Edge.

Summary

This guide showed you how to control whether Microsoft Edge automatically upgrades your existing accounts to use passkeys. Passkeys are a more secure alternative to passwords. You can find this setting in the Password Manager section of Edge’s settings. Turning it on allows Edge to offer to set up passkeys for your accounts, making logins safer. Turning it off keeps your current password-based login method.
