If you use the Windows Terminal app on your Windows 11 PC and want to change its language, this guide will help you do it in simple steps.
What is Windows Terminal?
Windows Terminal is a new app in Windows 11 where you can open command-line tools like
Command Prompt,
PowerShell, and even
Linux commands (using WSL).
It’s better than the old command-line apps because it lets you open many tabs, split windows, supports many characters, and you can customize colors and backgrounds.
How Does Windows Terminal Decide Its Language?
By default, Windows Terminal uses the same language as your Windows system. This means if your Windows is in English, Terminal will be English too. If you change your Windows language, Terminal changes too. But you can also change the Terminal language by itself!
Steps to Change the Language in Windows Terminal
- Open Windows Terminal:
Click the Start menu button (the Windows icon), type Terminal in the search box, and click on Windows Terminal when it appears.
Search for and open Windows Terminal - Open the Settings:
Once Terminal is open, look at the top bar and click the small down arrow ▼ button next to the tabs.
Then click Settings, or press Ctrl + , (comma) on your keyboard.

Click the down arrow and select Settings - Change the Language:
In the Settings window, click on the Appearance tab on the left side.
Look for the option called “Language (requires relaunch)”.
Click it and pick your preferred language from the list.

Select your preferred language here - Save and Restart:
Click the Save button at the bottom.
Then close Windows Terminal and open it again to see the new language in action.
That’s all! You have changed the language used in the Windows Terminal app.
