This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to always start or launch Microsoft Edge in InPrivate browsing mode in Windows 10.

Microsoft Edge will default to remember your web browsing history, cookies, tracking, and other web data.

This can be helpful in many cases, especially when visiting your favorite websites and not wanting to completely type the address in the address bar.

Your favorite websites will auto-complete, your saved passwords will get you to log in without typing, and many more valuable features are available in Edge standard mode.

However, some people want more privacy and can do that with InPrivate browsing mode with Microsoft Edge.

Edge InPrivate browsing mode tells the browser not to locally store your browsing history, cookies, tracking, site data, or any information you type in forms between sessions.

To get started with automatically opening Microsoft Edge InPrivate mode, follow the steps below:

Launch Edge in InPrivate Mode

To access Edge InPrivate mode from the standard session, open the browser, then at the top right corner, click on the three horizontal dots.

Then select the New InPrivate window. You can also quickly open InPrivate mode using the keyboard. Type Ctrl + Shift + N to open it.

That should do it!

Always open in InPrivate Mode.

If you always want to start Edge in InPrivate mode, open Edge, right-click the Edge icon from the taskbar, right-click Microsoft Edge in the popup, and select Properties.

This will open the Edge properties window. In the Shortcut tab, locate the Target text field.

The Target field will have a line similar to the one below:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --profile-directory=Default

We will change the text in the Target field and append the -private option.

 -inprivate

So the new target field text will look like this.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --profile-directory=Default -inprivate

Click Ok to save the changes and exit.

The next time you open Edge, it will open in InPrivate mode.

One thing to remember is Edge will only open in InPrivate mode when you launch it from the icon you modify from the taskbar or icon you modify from the desktop.

You can also modify the Edge icon from the Start menu by going to the path below:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Then modifying the icon there to include the -inprivate option.

To remove the InPrivate mode, right-click the icon, go to properties, and delete the option you added.
