How to Change Backgrounds on Each Monitor in Windows 11
Do you have more than one monitor connected to your Windows 11 PC? By default, Windows shows the same wallpaper on every screen. This guide shows you how to pick a unique background for each display.
Why do this? Setting different backgrounds helps you tell your screens apart at a glance. It also makes your workspace look more organized and personal.
What happens when done? Each of your monitors will display a different image, giving you a custom setup that fits your style.
Before you begin, you must be in “Extended” mode. If you are not sure how to do this, check out extend your display across multiple monitors here. If you need help, read this guide: How to extend the display to other monitors in Windows 11.
How to set a unique wallpaper for each screen
You can change these settings without needing special permissions. You do not need admin privileges for this task.
First, open your Settings menu. You can press the Windows key + I on your keyboard, or click Start and then Settings.

Next, click on Personalization in the left menu. Then, click the Background tile on the right side of your screen.

In this menu, you can choose to show a picture, a solid color, or a slideshow of photos. Look at the list of recent images shown under the “Recent images” section.
To assign a specific image to a specific monitor, right-click on the image you want to use. You will see a small menu appear. Select which monitor you want that image to appear on, such as Set for monitor 1 or Set for monitor 2.

If you want a different image on your other monitor, simply right-click a new image and select the remaining monitor from the list.

You can also configure a background slideshow if you want to use your own photos instead of the ones provided by Windows.
Summary
- Ensure your displays are set to “Extended” mode first.
- Open Settings by pressing Windows key + I.
- Go to Personalization > Background.
- Right-click an image and choose which monitor should display it.
- Repeat the process for every screen you have connected.
