How to Change the layout of the On-Screen Keyboard in Windows 11

Sometimes your physical keyboard might not work, or you might be using a device without one. Windows has a helpful tool called the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK). It’s a keyboard that appears right on your screen. You can use your mouse to type with it. Did you know you can change how it looks and works? Let’s learn how to customize your OSK.

Getting Started with the On-Screen Keyboard

Before we change the layout, you need to open the OSK. It’s something you can do from your Start menu.

1. Open Settings: Click the Start button (the Windows logo) on your screen. Then, choose Settings (the gear icon).
2. Go to Accessibility: In the Settings window, click Accessibility on the left side.
3. Find Keyboard settings: Scroll down in the Accessibility options and click Keyboard.

Understanding the OSK Layout Options

The On-Screen Keyboard has two main layouts to choose from: “General” and “Nav.”

The General Layout

The Nav Layout

The Nav layout is simpler, focusing more on navigation. It has important keys like Tab, Enter, Spacebar, and arrow keys. This layout is useful if you mainly use the OSK to move around Windows or select options, and it can make using your PC feel faster.

Switching Between Layouts

Changing between the General and Nav layouts is quick. You don’t need to go back to Settings; the option is right on the keyboard itself.

1. Find the Layout Key: Look at your On-Screen Keyboard. You will see a key that says either “Nav” or “General.” This is your switch!
2. Click to Switch: If your keyboard is in the General layout, clicking the “Nav” key will change it to the Nav layout. If you are in the Nav layout, clicking the “General” key will bring back the full keyboard.

Important Note: The OSK remembers the last layout you used. If you switch to the Nav layout when signing in, it will likely open in that layout next time. Closing and reopening the OSK does not reset it to the General layout. You must click the “General” or “Nav” key to change it.
