This guide explains how to manage OneDrive file sync within battery saver mode on Windows 11.

Microsoft OneDrive is a handy tool that keeps your documents and photos backed up to the cloud, updated, and ready to use on all your devices. When you change a file in your OneDrive folder, that change happens everywhere else automatically.

Why do this? By default, Windows pauses OneDrive when your laptop enters “Battery Saver” mode to save power. If you need your files to stay updated even while running on battery, you can change this setting.

What happens when done? Your files will continue to sync across your devices even when your laptop is trying to conserve energy. Note that this may cause your battery to drain slightly faster.

Enabling or Disabling OneDrive Sync in Battery Saver Mode

First, make sure you are signed in to OneDrive using your Microsoft account.

Look for the white or blue OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar near the clock.

If you do not see the icon, click the Show hidden icons arrow to show hidden icons. If it is still missing, open your Start menu, type OneDrive, and select it from the results to start the app.

Once the OneDrive window opens, click Help & Settings and then select Settings.

Go to the Settings tab. You will see a checkbox labeled Automatically pause sync when this device is in battery saver mode.

  • To stop syncing during battery saver mode, make sure this box is checked.
  • To allow syncing during battery saver mode, uncheck this box.

Click Ok to save your changes.

Remember, these settings are specific to each computer. You must repeat these steps on every device where you want to change this behavior.

Summary

OneDrive helps keep your files safe in the cloud. Windows normally stops syncing these files when your battery is low to help your PC last longer. By adjusting the settings in the OneDrive app, you can choose whether or not you want your files to keep updating while in battery saver mode. Remember to update this setting on every device you own if you want a consistent experience.
