This post shows students and new users how to turn Mono audio on or off in Windows 11. By default, Windows plays Sound through stereo mode, meaning there are different things in sound play through both the left and right speakers.
Left and right speakers play different things in stereo mode with an earbud or headset. Windows also supports Mono audio – meaning sounds; everything is combined and played through both speakers. Mono audio combines left and right audio channels into one.
If you have an earbud and want to listen only in one ear, you can turn on Mono audio so that everything is combined and played into both speakers. You’ll get better audio quality with Mono audio using only one earbud or headset playing in only one ear.
Below is how one turns Mono audio on or off in Windows 11.
How to enable Mono audio in Windows 11
As mentioned above, Windows supports Mono audio, combining left and right channels. So, if you only want to use one earbud or listen to music through one ear, then enabling mono audio should give you a better quality.
Below is how to do that.
Windows 11 has a centralized location for the majority of its settings. Everything can be done, from system configurations to creating new users and updating Windows from its System Settings pane.
To get to System Settings, you can use the Windows key + I shortcut or click on Start ==> Settings, as shown in the image below:

Alternatively, you can use the search box on the taskbar and search for Settings. Then select to open it.
Windows Settings pane should look similar to the image below. In Windows Settings, click System and select the Sound tile on the right pane of your screen, shown in the image below.

Select the Mono audio tile on the Sound settings pane and toggle the button to the On position.

You can now close and exit the Settings app.
How to turn off Mono audio in Windows 11
If the Mono audio isn’t playing well and the quality of the Sound is not better than in stereo mode, then simply turn it off.
Below is how to do that.
Reverse the steps above by going to the Start menu ==> Settings ==> System ==> Sound, select the Mono audio tile, and toggle the button to the Off position to deactivate it.

That should do it!
Conclusion:
- Mono audio is useful for users who prefer to listen through a single earbud or headset.
- Turning on Mono audio combines left and right channels, offering a consistent audio experience.
- Windows 11 makes activating or deactivating Mono audio through the Settings app easy.
