How to Choose Backup Folders in Dropbox on Windows 11
Do you use Dropbox to keep your files safe? You might not want to back up every single file on your computer. This guide shows you how to pick exactly which folders get saved to the cloud.
Why back up specific folders?
Backing up only what you need saves precious storage space. It also keeps your internet connection fast because you aren’t uploading unnecessary data.
What happens when you are done?
Once you finish these steps, Dropbox will automatically sync your chosen folders. Any changes you make to files in those folders will be updated in the cloud instantly.
Dropbox is a great tool for keeping your work safe. You can manage many settings, including starting Dropbox on system startup, disabling Dropbox startup in the background, adding Microsoft Office add-in, turning notifications on or off, managing backups, turning automatic backups on or off, renaming backup device name, and changing backup frequency.
How to change your backup folders
You can adjust your backup settings at any time using the Dropbox app.
- Click the Taskbar overflow icon in your notification area and select Dropbox to open the flyout window.

- Click the Settings (gear icon) at the top of the window and select Preferences.

- Go to the Backups tab. Click the Manage backups button under the “This PC” section.

Note: If you have already set up your device, you can also click My PC (DeviceName) under the Sync and backups tab in the flyout window.

- This opens your backup settings. Select the Choose or change folder backing up tile. Then, click the Choose folder button.

- A window will appear showing your files. Check the boxes next to the folders you want to save. Uncheck the boxes for folders you want to stop backing up.

- Click the right-caret icon next to a folder to see and select specific subfolders.

- Click the Save button to finish. Note: Depending on your system security settings, this action may require admin privileges.
Summary
Managing your Dropbox backups helps you take control of your storage and data usage. By carefully selecting which folders are included, you ensure that your most important documents are always protected while keeping your Dropbox account clean and organized.
