This post shows students and new users steps to turn Game Mode on or off using Windows 11, which may help resolve some performance issues. Game Mode is enabled by default on Windows 11.

With this feature enabled, Windows prioritizes your gaming experience by preventing Windows Update from updating systems drivers and sending restart notifications. Windows also try to achieve a more stable frame rate depending on the specific game and system.

This can cause performance issues on some systems, especially when Windows wrongly detects an application it thinks is a game in progress. It then reconfigures the system optimized for Gaming when a game is not being played.

If you’re experiencing performance issues or noticing strange display errors, you may want to turn off game mode to see if that resolves your issues. The steps below will show you how to do that in Windows 11.

To get started with turning off or on game mode when using Windows 11, follow the steps below.

How to disable Game Mode on Windows 11

To get to System Settings, you can use the Windows key + I shortcut or click on Start ==> Settings, as shown in the image below:

Alternatively, you can use the search box on the taskbar and search for Settings. Then select to open it.

Windows Settings pane should look similar to the image below. In Windows Settings, click Gaming, and select Game Mode on the right pane of your screen shown in the image below.

On the Game Mode settings pane, toggle the button on the Game Mode tile to the Off position to disable.

Setting changes are done in Windows Settings; You can exit when you’re done.
