How to Add a Drive to a Storage Pool in Windows 11

If you want to keep your files safe and have more space on your computer, you can add extra drives to a Storage Pool using Windows 11’s Storage Spaces feature. This lets you combine several drives into one big virtual drive, making it easier to store and protect your data.

What is Storage Spaces?

Storage Spaces is a tool in Windows 11 that lets you group multiple hard drives or SSDs into one storage pool. This helps you:

  • Get more storage space by combining drives.
  • Protect your files with redundancy (copies of your data).
  • Improve storage performance by using multiple drives together.

You can add more drives to your storage pool anytime to increase space and protect your data better.


How to Add a Drive to Your Storage Pool

Follow these simple steps to add a new drive to your existing Storage Pool:

  1. Open Windows Settings:

    Click the Start menu and select Settings, or press Windows key + I on your keyboard.

  2. Go to System Settings:

    In the Settings window, click System on the left side.

  3. Open Storage Settings:

    On the right, click Storage to open the storage options.

    Select “Storage”

  4. Find Storage Spaces:

    Scroll down and click Advanced storage settings to expand it, then click Storage Spaces.

  5. Open Your Storage Pool:

    Click on your existing Storage pool to see its details.

  6. Add a New Drive:

    Click on the Physical Disks section, then press the Add a disk button.

    Click “Add a disk”

  7. Select the Drive:

    Choose the new drive you want to add and click Add. Note: This drive will be formatted (all data erased) before joining the pool, so make sure you have backed up any important files.

    Select the disk and click Add

After the process finishes, your new drive will be part of the Storage Pool!

You can now close the Settings app.
