This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to turn on BitLocker quickly and easily when using Windows 10.
BitLocker helps protect your computer data so only authorized users can access it. If someone tries to access your BitLocker-enabled computer, you must authenticate.
BitLocker is a security feature in Windows 10 that helps protect your data by encrypting it. When you turn on BitLocker, the data on your computer is scrambled and can only be accessed by authorized users with the correct authentication information.
This helps prevent unauthorized access to your data, even if someone steals your computer or removes your hard drive. Turning on BitLocker can protect your sensitive information, such as financial data or personal documents.
When you’re ready to learn how to quickly and easily turn on BitLocker, follow the steps below:
Sign in as Administrator
Sign in to Windows with an administrator account (you may have to sign out and back in to switch accounts) if you’re not currently signed in as an administrator.
Turn on the Device Encryption
After logging in as administrator, select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security > Device encryption.
If Device encryption doesn’t appear, it isn’t available.

You may be able to use standard BitLocker encryption instead
If device encryption is turned off, select Turn on.
Use Standard Encryption
If your computer isn’t compatible with Windows device encryption, you may be able to use standard BitLocker encryption.
While still logged in as an administrator, In the search box on the taskbar, type Manage BitLocker and select it from the results list.
Or you can select the Start button and Control Panel under Windows Systems. In the Control Panel, select System and Security, and then under BitLocker Drive Encryption, select Manage BitLocker.

Select Turn on BitLocker and then follow the instructions.
Note: It isn’t available on Windows 10 Home Edition.
