This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to turn off InPrivate mode in Microsoft Edge browser with Windows 10 and specifies whether users can open pages in InPrivate mode in Microsoft Edge.

The new Microsoft Edge browser has adopted the Chromium open-source project code base, offering better web compatibility and performance over the legacy Edge.

Microsoft Edge browser is cross-platform and supports all Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. If you’re currently using Edge and want to learn how to disable or force enable InPrivate mode and help protect your privacy, the steps below should show you how.

Microsoft Edge lets users open the web page in InPrivate mode by default. This can help users browse privately with many features disabled, including tracking and web history. However, in some environments, this may go against company policy.

To get started with disabling InPrivate mode in Edge, follow the steps below:

Use InPrivate mode in Edge

By default, users can use InPrivate mode in Edge. This may be a good feature for personal use; however, this may go against the business policy in some business environments.

When you use InPrivate tabs or windows, your browsing data (like your history, temporary internet files, and cookies) isn’t saved on your PC once you’re done.

To use it in Microsoft Edge, select the Settings and More—icon and then the New InPrivate window.

Or you can simply type the keys below on your keyboard to open Edge InPrivate mode.

Ctrl + Shift + N

Disable InPrivate mode via registry

You can also block InPrivate mode in Microsoft Edge from the Windows registry.

If logged in as an administrator, you can also turn off this feature via the Windows registry. To do that, use the steps below:

Using the Windows registry is one way to force all users on the system to block or turn off InPrivate mode. There are multiple ways to do this in Windows; however, using the Windows registry is the easiest and most effective way.

To enable, press the Windows Key + on your keyboard to open the run command box. Or use the search function to search for the Run app.

In the command box, type the commands below and press Enter.

regedit

When the Windows registry opens, navigate to the path below. If you don’t see the Edge key, create one.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge

Right-click the Edge key and select the New > DWORD (32-bit) Value option to create a REG_DWORD value if you don’t see the existing InPrivateModeAvailability value already created.

If you don’t see the Edge key or folder, create one.

Name the new DWORD value as:

InPrivateModeAvailability

After saving the DWORD above, double-click it to open. Then, enter the value of 0 to make InPrivate mode available to all. 1 to turn it off for all and 2 to force InPrivate mode.

  • * Enabled 0 = InPrivate mode available
  • * Disabled 1 = InPrivate mode disabled
  • * Forced 2 = InPrivate mode forced

If you don’t configure this policy or set it to ‘Enabled,’ users can open pages in InPrivate mode. Set this policy to ‘Disabled’ to stop users from using InPrivate mode. Set this policy to ‘Forced’ always to use InPrivate mode.

That should do it!
